Dag 3862 – John Williams – Star Wars (Main Title)

Ik las een uiterst interessant interview met jazz pianist Vijay Iyer over de muziek in zijn leven. De Star Wars Main Title is zijn keuze voor zijn kinderjaren, maar hij kijkt er naar met zijn huidige kennis.

Listening to the score now, I can hear that it is very 20th-century, and actually kind of old-fashioned, with that swashbuckling energy. There’s something kind of fascist about it: the patriotic fervor, the marches. John Williams makes use of the brass in a way that’s meant to dominate you—and I guess it worked, because I became obsessed with the Star Wars cinematic universe, as we now would call it.

Ik las ook een recensie van de soundtrack van de Obi-Wan mininserie. Geen John Williams, al hebben ze wel zijn Obi-Wan theme geleend, maar ene Nathalie Holt en William Ross. “A general lack of iconic themes… dull action music… dangerously near-generic musical style.“

Zolang Disney de rechten in handen heeft is het voor mij geen star Wars meer.
