Dag 2056 – Chris De Burgh – Don’t Pay The Ferryman

Ik las het luisterdagboekinterview met schrijver Chuck Klosterman op Pitchfork en moest wel lachen om zijn observatie:

There’s an element of the lyrics to this song that I find very confusing. The whole premise is that you’re on the ferry and a storm is coming. Maybe the ferryman is the grim reaper, or maybe he’s just a guy who runs the ferry, but the idea is that you don’t pay the ferryman until he gets you to the other side. But, if the fear is that the boat is going to sink, what difference does it make when you pay him? If he takes your money on the ride and the boat goes down, you’re all going to drown. How can he trick you? I don’t think he’s going to turn around, because you’re already halfway across. Go ahead and pay the ferryman, I say.

Note to self: binnenkort maar eens een boek van de beste man lezen.
