Now this is musicians music. One of my best friends played bass. If not, I would have never heard of John Patitucci. We even went to see John Patitucci play live, in Parker’s Jazz Club, Amsterdam, somewhere early nineties. One of the best, and one of the strangest concerts I’ve ever been to. The concert started round midnight, and the club was filled with three sort of people: music students in groups or alone with beer, Japanese businessmen in suit with beer or wine and, well, I think they were crime syndicate bosses. They were the only ones that had tables, wifes in expensive clothes, champagne and big sigars. Right before the concert strated they were asked to stop smoking cause else the sax player did not have enough air. Then the band came on stage, as last drummer Vinnie Colaiuta smoking a big joint.
Around that same time me and the friend went to some trade fair where I hold a bass designed by John Patitucci (probably the Yamaha TRB-JP). I had played my friends bass a few times, but this thing was so huge I almost couldn’t handle it. John Patitucci is realy a giant among giants.
I couldn’t find any video’s from this early Patitucci record, so instead some recording from the early nineties by the Chick Corea trio. Vinnie Colaiuta once again smoking.
